Description

Sashiko is a Japanese hand-stitching practice which has been used for centuries and continues into our current times to mend, patch, strengthen, quilt, and embellish garments and home goods for longevity and beauty.  With focus on exploration of the craft, workshop participants will learn how to handle thread, layout a simple grid, draw patterns, employ a Sashiko needle, and use a simple running stitch to create designs onto their sampler squares.  Students will choose from a variety of traditional Sashiko patterns that suit their comfort level and design aesthetic; tiny plus sign, linked steps, flower stitch, squares and diamonds, ocean waves, or seven treasures.  The beautiful stitched squares can later become a patch, a pocket, or a coaster.

$25 first-timer basic class kit includes: one pair of Olympus Sashiko needles, one skein of thread, needle threader, bees' wax, fabric pen, grid and circle templates, pattern guide.

$15 required fee for all students includes Sashiko Sampler squares plus access to all the communal tools and materials.

Studens should wear your good reading glasses!  Bring a water bottle, coffee/tea, and a snack.  Returning Sashiko students bring your supplies from past workshops.
